  • Notes
    • Their marriage certificate stating his calling to be a carpenter.
Between the years 1829 and 1848 his wife Jane bore him 10 children.
David owned Four Hotels in Grahamstown. He was not a very good businessman and made some very poor investments.
The size of the family and the ill managed affairs of David II throw some light on David I’s remarks in a letter to Joseph McMaster. No doubt the ‘too good-natured’ treatment of his son consisted in having to render frequent financial assistance to the family, for David II was financiallly, if not socially, an unsuccessful hotelkeeper. Although he owned and managed three or four hotels in succession in Grahamstown and district, he was declared insolvent at least three times and was insolvent at the date of his death.
That his father supposed that he was dreadfully in David II’s black books is due to the fact that the old man had shrewdly added a codicil to his Will to provide that David II should not be paid his share of the inheritance but that it should be invested by the Executors and only the interest paid to him during his lifetime. The hotel-keeper died oon the 6 June 1852 at Port Elizabeth, home of his eldest daughter Isabella Frances and her first husband Joseeph WRIGHT.
ALL 10 children grew up to marry and have children, and by far the greater number of present day McMASTERs in South Africa (the ‘dark-haired McMasters) can claim David II as their ancestor. [1]
