Ann died on 2nd June 1852 age 71.(1779-1852)
Taken from a report compiled by Denis Herbert Patrick assisted by Mary Grace Jemima Ulyate.:- Edward Wynne recruited a party of 344 persons in London. This party was of the independant type, ie: each settler paying the deposit of his own family. Thomas Colling was given charge of it but was unable to embark on the appointed date & Hezekiah Sephton was appointed to take charge of the party. Most of them sailed in "AURORA" with the balance, 33 families, in "BRILLIANT" the sister ship.
The "AURORA 500 tons, sailed from London on Sunday 6th Feb 1820. commanded by Captain Thomas Pearson, was delayed at Gravesend and on the 15 Feb sailed together with the "BRILLIANT", 330 tons commanded by Captain William Bothwell, both ships arrived in Angola Bay on Monday 15th May, exactly 3 months later. Brilliant arrived in the morning and Aurora in the evening. The whole party then encamped with other settlers awaiting the arrival of wagons to convey them inland. After a delay of about 3 weeks wagons arrived but not sufficient to convey all of Sephton's party, so they left Angola Bay in 2 batches. Sephton + half left on Mon 5th June and were first located at Reed Fountain (Reitfontein) and later moved to Assegai Bush River where, on tht 23rd July 1820 they were joined by the remainder of their party from Algoa Bay. This their final location, was about 9 miles above the junction of the Assegai Bush River and the Kareiga River.
At the extreme north west of the settlement was located John Stuart & Priscilla Talbot & family. On the south bank of the river Joseph Short, wife Mary, nee Edwards, & family, lower down on the same side were Joseph Wilmot and wife Ann, opposite Wilmot & Wood on the north bank lived Thomas and Sophia Slater & family, near them with a deep gorge between lived Benjamin Patrick & family, this gorge was known as Patrick's Kloof. At thr extreme south of the settlement was James Witheridge, William Shepherd & Charles Thomas Croft with his baby daughter Clarissa, his wife Elizabeth age 22 having died shortly after sailing. Thomas Robinson with his wife Mary +6 children were also members of this party, 2 of their sons, Thomas George & Charles, were destined later to marry respectively, Amelia & Sophia Talbot, daughters of John & Priscilla. Their village at the end of the settlement thay named "SALEM" and for many years made a practice of gathering on the 23 July to commemorate the founding thereof.
The children of Salem settlers received early educational attention, for William Henry Matthews, a schoolmaster, was a member of the party. He began teaching in 1820 & became master of the school, opened there in 1822.
Miss Sarah Slater, who followed her parents to South Africa in 1826 with Sephton's party, kept a girl's school at her parents home.
Because of disputes over many matters Sephton was removed as head of the party and the administration was taken over by a committee elected and thereafter used the title "Head of the Party".
With the exception of the Scotch party at Caviaans River, the large pary under Sephton was the most thriving of all. After a year, they had already built a neat little villiage called Salem, established a school and their clergyman, the Rev. William Shaw, conducted services regulary.

Janie, I was looking for an adoption in 1880 Manchester and this is what they
told me -
"there were no adoptions in our current sense in England
until 1927, following our first Adoption Act in 1926. Before that date
families sometimes signed a Statutory Declaration and a record of these, or
at least of some, is held at,

93 After a spell of elephant hunting in the interior, Joseph William purchased a claim on the newly discovered diamond fields. When this failed to yield the expected fortune he tried diamond prospecting in the Winberg district, there he was equally unsuccessful. Next, in partnership with his brother, David John, he was engaged in wool-washing on the farm ‘Whittington’. Finally he acquired his own farm, ‘Constantia’ near Hoopstad.
It was here that Annie Jane died on 26 January 1877. On 27 October 1878, Joseph William, at 37 years of age married 18 year old Christina Maria De BRYN of Fauriesmith who bore him ten children.
Near the turn of the century Joseph McMaster disposed of ‘Constantia’ and purchased the farm ‘Zaaiplaats’ adjoined the farm ‘Prinsberg’ the home of Charles NEWBERRY, which, with its great plantations and herds of antelope of every species to be found in South Africa, held a great fascinaation for the McMASTER children. ‘Zaaiplaats’ too, is remembered with affection by those of Joseph William’s descendants who are old enough to have known the farm, and they recall with nostalgic pleasure the flowering cherry trees and the beautiful garden in which peacocks strutted. Above all they remember the great gatherings at ‘Zaailpaats’ - some of them lasting for many days - when countless friends and relatives assembled there to take part in the target-shooting contests which Joseph William was so fond of organising (for he was regarded as the best marksman in the Free State in his time). This grand old Free Stater died on 20 January 1909 at the age of 67 and was buried on this farm.
His widow, Christina, survived him by 33 years and died at Bethlehem O.F.S. at the age of 82. Of Joseph William’s seventeen children, 2 died in infancy. The remaining fifteen married and had children and today his many descendants are scattered far and wide throughout thr Republic and adjoining territories.
At the time of writing (1978) there are three of his children still living: Mrs Maud Eliza SKEA (formerly Mrs ATKINS) of Fouriesburg, Mr David Frederick McMaster of Paul Roux, and Mrs May Dorothy BERRANGE of Johannesburg. (By Kathryn Baxabu Dhabi).
